Future of Fashion: Summer in New York & More Recs!

This post is long overdue, but here is a recap of my summer in NYC and more recommendations!

This summer, I was lucky enough to be accepted into the School of the New York Times Summer Academy Pre-College program.  I completed the course “The Future of Fashion.” In this course, I studied how sustainable fashion can be improved in the industry and different ways that designers work towards producing more environmentally conscious collections.  We also learned about innovations in wearable technology, and unique sustainable fabrics. Many of the days involved field trips to the New York Times Building, the NY Garment District, Mood Fabrics, and behind the scenes of the Met Museum’s costume institute.  At the costume institute of the Met, we went inside the fashion conservation lab where aging clothing pieces were being restored to their original condition to put on display. At the Times’ bustling building inside a conference room, our class spoke with Vanessa Friedman, head fashion editor for the Times, who explained her take on fashion sustainability, where she sees the future of fashion heading, and her writing process for articles.  In my short two weeks in New York, I worked on a fashion criticism piece analyzing the Camp exhibit at the Met, as well as researching innovations in fashion technology. For my final project, I designed a capsule collection of garments with pockets lined to prevent radiation from cell phones, and I wanted each piece to be made from recycled materials. In combination with all that I learned in the classroom and through various excursions and field trips, I met great friends with whom I explored New York City in my free time!  Through this experience, accomplished professors at the School of the New York Times helped me to grow as a writer, fashion critic, and pushed me to think outside of the box when it comes to the evolution of fashion. I can’t wait to start conversations around fashion in my school community with the Style Club I am starting this year!

My mom took me a few days early before checking into my camp to explore the city and tour colleges.  I, of course, took this opportunity to try out new restaurants, as well as revisit my favorites (you can check out my extended NYC recommendations here.)
