Gaby’s Style Identity: an Interview

Today, I sat down with my classmate and new friend, Gaby, to discuss her personal style, and fashion story. Gaby studies business and fashion, and on the side, she is an artist and photographer. Today, she’s wearing a white linen blazer over a royal blue floral top, with slightly distressed denim and white sneakers–Stan Smith’s are her go-to. Gaby compliments this outfit with a stunning handmade artisanal bag with pompoms, which adds a perfect pop of color and unique addition to her overall ensemble.

When I looked at Gaby’s outfit details today, I was immediately drawn to her fun jewelry and accessories. Gaby’s view of accessories is essential to understanding her style identity. She cherishes vintage and heirloom jewelry pieces passed down from family, as well as pieces handmade by artisans which she wears daily. The way Gaby accesorizes her looks makes each outfit true to her individuality. Gaby’s style from high school to college has evolved through a journey of fashion discovery. While in high school she experimented with trends and figuring out her authentic individual “look,” in college she transitioned to a more professional wardrobe with a hint of casual streetwear. Throughout this evolution of Gaby’s style, one thing has remained consistent: her daily jewelry, and an emphasis on artisanal made accessories.

Gaby’s wardrobe staples include a mix of classic pieces like blazers, denim, jumpsuits, and dresses, typically featuring solid bold colors such as royal blue, emerald green, and purple. If she mixes a pattern into her look, it tends to be a small floral print or shiny fabric. Gaby stays true to her personal style, and does not wear something “trendy” if she dislikes it. For example, wide leg and low rise pants are trends Gaby stays away from, and I admire how she stays true to herself and wears what is most flattering and authentic to her. Looking into the future, Gaby hopes to incorporate upcoming trends such as jewel tones, oversized jackets, and trousers into her wardrobe.

To finish off our lovely conversation in an outdoor Parisian courtyard, I asked Gaby about who she would love to meet and have dinner with in the fashion industry. She immediately knew her answer would be Olivier Rousteing, the creative director at Balmain. Rousteing’s designs are bold with interesting beadwork, eccentric with shoulder pads, and an integration of “edgy” and “elegant.” Gaby feels inspired by his vision, and the innovation he has implemented into Balmain.
